About Us

The Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists (PABJ) is a non-profit, professional association of the region’s journalists and media professionals.

The organization formed in 1973 out of concern about the lack of quality coverage about Philadelphia’s Black Community, and a scarcity of Black Journalists in the regions’ newsrooms. The small, but inspired group of journalists that organized around the concerns of Philadelphia’s Black Community later became the backbone of the group that assembled to organize the National Association of Black Journalists on in Washington DC two years later. PABJ then joined NABJ as it's founding chapter.

Nearly 35 years later, PABJ has continued not only to advocate for more consistent, quality coverage of the regions’ minority communities and better representation of our journalists in them…. but also serves as an active community partner through our community outreach programs including our media access workshop, Communications High School Partnership, and annual Scholarship Program.

Working to make a difference every day, we hope that you will be able to help PABJ continue it’s positive impact in the Delaware Valley by becoming a member, participating in our programs, or supporting our projects.

Honoring our best with a National Flair
CBS Evening News Weekend Anchor Russ Mitchell joined PABJ VP/Broadcast Denise James at our 2007 Banquet of Honors. This yearly event honors the best in Philadelphia Black Journalism.
