Calling all photo, print, broadcast and internet journalists! Interested mentors and volunteers, download our application HERE. As journalists, we often seek to make a positive difference in people’s lives through our work. We write and shoot stories that expose hidden wrongdoing. We craft pieces that safeguard what's right and shed light on inspiring possibilities and life altering personal triumphs. Your next assignment could be among your best yet. The Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists has adopted the Communications Technology High School. It is a Philadelphia high school for students who want to pursue careers in journalism and communications. PABJ invites you to join this partnership and share your expertise with students at the Southwest Philadelphia school as a speaker, mentor, hands on trainer or special project facilitator. As a volunteer, you can make an immeasurable difference in the lives of young people who have a passion for what you do. It is your opportunity to help nurture the inquisitive spirits of developing student journalists and photographers. It is a chance to make a real difference in the life of someone who is approaching the path you walk each day. All you have to do is share your knowledge. As professionals with demanding schedules, carving out volunteer time may be difficult. But fear not. As a PABJ volunteer mentor, you can get in where you fit in. Design a program that meets your schedule, whether it’s through mentoring a specific child on a regular basis, periodically helping with a class project, hosting a one time editing seminar or speaking to a group of students. PABJ will also host Going Back to School days in September, November, March and May. You are invited to attend then or visit the school at times that work best for you. This assignment calls for more than reporters. The students need to learn from professional print, broadcast and internet writers, reporters, photographers, producers, technology gurus and editors. Communications Technology high is ripe for what we have to offer. The school has journalism writing classes, photography classes, avid edit stations and a TV studio among its assets. Communications Technology High School is at 8110 Lyons Avenue in Philadelphia. (Near 84th street & Lindbergh Blvd.) Sarah Glover, of the Philadelphia Inquirer is coordinating online and print journalism mentors. Denise James of 6ABC-TV is coordinating broadcast journalism mentors. For additonal questions, Sarah can also be reached at 215-854-5210. Just think; mentoring journalism students could be among your most rewarding assignments yet.
