Scholarship

The Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists awards two $1,000 scholarships to deserving high school seniors or college students who reside in the Delaware Valley. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 (C+), and must submit a copy of their transcript as part of their application.

Applications for the current year are accepted between January 1 – May 1.
All applications for the current award year must be postmarked by May 1.

Students should be available to accept their award at the PABJ Banquet of Honors held in early June.
Additional application requirements are listed below. ALL applicants MUST state their intention to pursue careers in journalism. It is ideal that ALL application materials be submitted at the same time to the Scholarship Committee.

Requirements:

High school applicants:

  • Must write a two-page profile, story or interview with a person they respect or admire, such as a teacher, community leader, parent, or role model.
  • Submit a writing sample (either a story published in a school or other newspaper, an essay for a class or other published sample of their work).
  • Provide two letters of recommendation in a sealed envelope with the person's signature across the seal. One of the letters should be from a current English teacher.

College applicants:

  • Must submit an essay on why they are pursuing a journalism career.
  • Must submit a writing sample, such as a class essay, short story or published news article (for print applicants), or a 1:30 minute to 3 minute videotape or audiotape (for broadcast journalists).
  • Two letters of recommendation from a teacher, supervisor or mentor.
