Panel
on Sept. 11 Attacks
Nov. 13, 2001
A
month after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centers and the
Pentagon, Americans were still trying to figure out the root of such
anger toward the country. They were also realizing that they knew
little about Muslims and Islam. PABJ invited three scholars to discuss
the topic: "Shattering the Peace: Understanding the Roots of
the Sept. 11 Attacks." Our guest panelists were Chieke Ihejirika,
a professor of political science and international relations at Lincoln
University; Iman Shamsud-din Ali, spokesman for the Majlis Ash-Shura
of Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley, and Rafiq Kalam Id-din, administrative
assistant Masjid Al-Mujahideen. The moderator was Christopher Ridenhour,
host "Philly Live: The African American Connection" on WYBE-TV,
Channel 35.
Perfect
Motion Dance Forum
May 30, 2001
Four
noted artistic directors were our guests for a chat on dance titled,
"Perfect Motion: The Evolution and Diversity of Dance."
The panelists were Robert Garland, resident choreographer for the
Dance Theater of Harlem; Joan Myers Brown, artistic director/founder
of Philadanco; Roy Kaiser, artistic director of the Pennsylvania Ballet,
and Rennie Harris, artistic director/founder of Rennie Harris Puremovement.
Denise Saunders, KYW-TV News anchor/reporter, moderated the discussion.
The event coincided with two performances by the Dance Theater at
the Mann Center for the Performing Arts. Perfect Motion was co-sponsored
by Dance Affiliates and Philadelphia Newspapers Inc. Our
panelists,
and audience, had plenty to say.

Drive Speaker: Farai Chideya
April
17, 2001
Farai Chideya, well-known journalist and anchor of "Pure Oxygen,"
a prime-time show on the women's network Oxygen, was the speaker for
our annual membership drive. Chideya spoke on the role and responsibility
of the media on the issue of race relations in a changing society.
Her book, "The Color of Our Future," discusses the future
of race through the eyes of young Americans of all races. Copies of
the book were sold at the event. A former ABC correspondent, Chideya
has covered a range of issues from youth to politics. In 1996, she
spent the presidential election season as a CNN political analyst,
and was named to the New York Daily News' "Dream Team" of
political reporters and commentators. In 1997, Newsweek named her
to its "Century Club" of 100 people to watch. Check out
the event in our photo gallery Snapshots.
