Student Outreach

PABJ offers an academic scholarship program. PABJ awards two $1,000 scholarships to students interested in pursuing careers in journalism. To view the awards criteria and application, visit here. Scholarship winners are acknowledged at the PABJ Awards Ceremony in June.

PABJ works with students through mentoring, public speaking opportunities and community partnerships. PABJ has cultivated an ongoing partnership with Communications Technology High School in Southwest Philadelphia. PABJ has offered industry critique sessions, portfolio reviews, book club/signings, and networking opportunities for students. See our events page for upcoming PABJ events.

The Temple University Association of Black Journalists (TABJ) is an official student chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists. TABJ won the 2006 National Association of Black Journalists' Student Chapter of the Year award. The organization provides minority journalists with networking opportunities they need to start their career. PABJ works with TABJ on an ongoing basis. For more information about TABJ, please contact president Kimberley Richards at kimberley.richards@temple.edu.

NABJ offers a barrage of student programs and services, including: internships, scholarships, student projects at convention, broadcast/multimedia shortcourses, and mentoring. To view the range of NABJ student services, visit here.

Komen Race for the Cure

Plan to celebrate Mother's Day morning with your family members and Team PABJ as we participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The Komen walk/run takes place the morning of Mother's Day, May 9 at 8:15 a.m. PABJ has participated in the walk for a handful of years now. We'll be walking in honor of NABJ Founder Sandra Long, a breast cancer survivor.

If you can't make the walk itself, you're welcome to make a donation. Team PABJ has a goal of $2,000. Help us meet it by participating or donating. The race entry fees are: $36.75 for adults (13 and over) and $16.75 for children (12 and under).

To register for the walk with Team PABJ, click here.

If you are not able to participate in the walk/run, you can donate to the cause, helping Team PABJ meet its goal. To donate, visit here

Also, here's another easy way to support the Philadelphia Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and help PABJ meet its fundraising goal. Avon representative Stacie Miller has agreed to donate 75 percent of her proceeds to this great cause. Simply follow the link to place your order, which will be shipped to you. Avon has some wonderful products and you get to help a worthy cause. This is the 20th anniversary of the Philadelphia walk and you can help make a difference. Visit here to place your order.

Team PABJ will meet at the corner of 15th & Callowhill at 7:00 a.m. on May 9 and walk over to the staging area together. There's free parking available in the Inquirer/Daily News lot. For more information, contact Team Captain Melanie Burney at mburney@phillynews.com or 215-854-2899.
